This title in the SC Code of Laws encompasses statutes dealing with
motor vehicles. Specifically, in section 56-1-10, “Department” is defined
as the SC Department of Public Safety (DPS). In a subsequent Code
section (56-19-20), the “department” is designated to have the
administration and enforcement authority for the provisions of this
Chapter (Chapter 19).
Among much other useful information in Title 56, Chapter 15 spells
out provisions of the law relating to the regulation of manufacturers,
distributors and dealers of motor vehicles. Of particular interest to
many yards is Article 340 which deals with records, record keeping
and records inspections.
Chapter 19, Article 480 specifically addresses the “transfer and
surrender of certificates, license plates, registration cards and
manufacturers’ serial plates of vehicles sold as salvage, abandoned,
scrapped or destroyed.” Article 485 clarifies the “designation of
vehicles as ’wreckage’ or ’salvage’, etc.”
This title in the SC Code names specific offenses and penalties involving
motor vehicle titles.
